Your Balm Questions, Answered
Frequently Asked Questions
(The Balm Co. – Colorado Mountain Balm Company)
Are your balms good for daily use?
Yes. Every balm we make is designed for daily use and performs best when used consistently. Our balms support healthy skin, hair, and lips by nourishing the natural barrier, locking in moisture, and protecting against dryness, weather, and environmental stress.
Do your balms work for all skin types?
Yes. Our balms are gentle, balanced, and safe for all skin types including dry, normal, sensitive, and easily irritated skin. Because there is no water, alcohol, preservatives, or synthetic fillers, they do not disrupt the skin barrier and are well-tolerated by most people.
Do your balms feel greasy?
No. Although our balms are rich and deeply moisturizing, they melt smoothly on contact and absorb cleanly. They leave your skin and hair soft, conditioned, and protected without a greasy or oily residue.
Do your balms clog pores?
No. Our balms are non-comedogenic. Beef tallow has a fatty-acid profile similar to human sebum, which allows it to absorb naturally into the skin without clogging pores or causing buildup. The rest of our ingredients are lightweight and breathable.
How long do the balms last?
Because our balms contain no water, no fillers, and no synthetic preservatives, they naturally last between 12 and 24 months when stored at room temperature away from high heat. Vitamin E further supports stability and freshness.
Can The Body Balm be used on the face?
Yes. The Body Balm is gentle enough for facial use, including sensitive areas, yet rich enough to hydrate tough or dry areas like elbows, hands, heels, and arms. Many customers use it as a daily face moisturizer.
Can The Hair Balm be used on all hair types?
Yes. The Hair Balm works on straight, curly, wavy, coarse, fine, and thick hair. It softens, strengthens, smooths frizz, and adds shine and control without weighing hair down or leaving it oily.
Does The Lip Balm work under lipstick or gloss?
Yes. It creates a smooth, hydrated base that helps lipstick apply evenly, improves comfort, and helps color last longer.
Are your balms safe for kids?
Yes. Our formulas are simple, clean, and gentle — ideal for babies, toddlers, and older children. The Baby Balm is especially popular for dry cheeks, drool rash, diaper areas, and sensitive skin.
Do your products contain seed oils?
No. We never use industrial seed oils such as canola, soybean, sunflower, safflower, cottonseed, grapeseed, rice bran, peanut oil, or vegetable-oil blends. These oils are highly processed, unstable, and commonly found in commercial skincare.
Our balms use only stable, natural ingredients such as beef tallow, mango butter, shea butter, beeswax, cera bellina, arrowroot powder, vitamin E, and essential oils — ingredients your skin recognizes and absorbs beautifully.
Do your products contain drying alcohols?
No. We never use drying alcohols of any kind. Many commercial products rely on alcohols because they make lotions and hair products absorb faster, keep water and oil mixed, and extend shelf life — but they can strip moisture, weaken the skin barrier, and dry out hair and scalp. Our balms contain only moisturizing, barrier-supportive ingredients that help the skin and hair stay protected and hydrated.
Why do commercial lotions and hair products use drying alcohols?
Commercial lotions and hair products often contain 50–80% water, which requires preservatives, stabilizers, and fast-evaporating alcohols to keep the formula mixed and shelf-stable. Drying alcohols are added to create a quick-drying feel and prevent separation between the water and oils.
However, these alcohols can be extremely harsh:
For skin:
– They strip natural oils
– They weaken the skin barrier
– They create a cycle of dryness that needs constant reapplication
For hair:
– They pull moisture from the hair shaft
– They cause brittleness, frizz, and breakage
– They dry out the scalp
– They worsen color damage and split ends
– They weaken curls, waves, and natural texture
This is why many people notice their skin and hair becoming progressively drier, weaker, and more irritated when using products that rely on drying alcohols.
Our balms contain zero drying alcohols, so both your skin and hair stay soft, nourished, and naturally protected.
Why don’t you whip your balms?
We do not whip our balms for several important reasons:
– Whipping traps air, which shortens shelf life and causes faster oxidation.
– Whipped balms collapse over time and appear half empty.
– Air pockets create uneven texture and faster ingredient breakdown.
– Whipped balms melt in heat and re-harden gritty or grainy.
– Texture becomes inconsistent from batch to batch.
– Whipping does not improve performance in any way.
By leaving our balms unwhipped, they remain smooth, creamy, stable, and long-lasting — exactly the texture a luxury balm should have.
Can the balms stain clothing or bedding?
No. When used in the recommended amount and massaged into the skin or hair properly, they do not stain clothing or bedding. A little goes a long way, and the balm absorbs cleanly.
Do your balms melt in heat?
They can soften if left in a very hot car or direct sunlight, but because they are not whipped, they re-solidify into the same smooth texture when cooled.
Do your balms freeze in winter or cold weather?
They may firm up slightly in very cold temperatures, but they soften quickly in your hands and apply normally. Performance is not affected.
Are your scents natural?
Yes. We use only pure essential oils. There are no synthetic fragrances, no parfum blends, and no artificial scents.
Do the scented balms smell strong?
No. Our scents are intentionally light, clean, and balanced. They do not overpower perfume or cologne.
Do you offer unscented?
Yes. Naked is completely unscented, clean, and neutral. Perfect for babies, sensitive skin, and those who prefer zero fragrance.
Are your balms pregnancy or breastfeeding safe?
Our ingredients are simple and natural, but because essential oil sensitivity varies, we recommend speaking with your doctor before using any new skincare product during pregnancy or nursing.
Are your products gluten-free?
Yes. Our balms contain no gluten ingredients.
Are your products safe for tattoos?
Yes. Many people use our balms to moisturize and protect tattooed skin because they are gentle and hydrating. For new tattoos, always follow your artist’s aftercare instructions.
Are your products safe for pets?
Our balms are made from natural ingredients, but they are not specifically formulated for animals. Consult your veterinarian before using any skincare product on pets.
Are your tins recyclable?
Yes. Our tins are fully recyclable and can also be reused for travel, storage, or small essentials.
Why are your balms better than lotion?
Most lotions contain 50–80% water, which requires preservatives, stabilizers, drying alcohols, and fillers to stay shelf-stable. When the water evaporates, skin often ends up drier than before.
Our balms contain zero water, which means:
– Richer, deeper, longer-lasting hydration
– No preservatives or stabilizers
– No fillers
– No drying alcohols
– A natural 1–2 year shelf life
– Stronger skin and hair barrier support
– No junk, ever
